If you have additional questions, need clarification, or your procedure is not listed, please contact us. Reduce your activity as much as possible for several hours. Avoid eating, drinking and unnecessary talking. Do not rinse mouth or brush teeth immediately following your procedure. These activities may hinder the formation of a blood clot, which is necessary for proper healing. To ease recovery from your dental visit, try the following the simple instructions below. ## Relieving Pain and Swelling Immediately following your procedure begin taking any medication as prescribed or directed by your doctor or assistant, to minimize discomfort. Application of an ice bag can also relieve discomfort as well as swelling. ## To Control Any Bleeding Immediately following the procedure keep a steady pressure on the bleeding area by biting firmly on a moistened gauze pad placed by your doctor or his assistant. Pressure helps reduce bleeding and permits formation of a clot in the tooth socket. Gently remove the compress after 45 minutes and replace it with a fresh gauze pad every hour or as needed. A trickle of blood is normal but if there is a persistent oozing, replace the gauze pad. Within 24 hours you may resume regular oral hygiene. ## Maintain a Proper Diet Have your meals at the usual time. Eat soft, nutritious foods and drink plenty of liquids with meals and in between. Have what you wish, but try to avoid, hard, crunchy foods, anything with small seeds or anything with husks (i.e. popcorn). ## Oral Hygiene is Important The next day after the bleeding has stopped, rinse mouth gently with a solution of one-half teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of lukewarm water. Repeat this every 2-3 hours for several days. Rinsing is important because it removes food particles and debris from the area and thus helps prevent infection and promote healing. ## In Case of Problems You should experience no trouble if you follow the instructions and suggestions as outlined. But if you should have any problems such as excessive bleeding, pain or difficulty opening your mouth, call the office immediately, for further instructions or additional treatment. ## Remember your follow-up visit It is often advisable to return for a postoperative visit to make certain healing is progressing satisfactorily. A follow-up will be suggested if necessary. If you have a "click or pop" when opening or closing your mouth, if you have ever had your jaw lock open or closed, or if you have had pain in your joints, head or neck headaches especially with new dental treatment or if your jaw muscles feel "tired or tight" you may have deterioration of your jaw joints, muscles, ligaments and/or teeth. Similar to high blood pressure or a clicking hip or knee joint, this chronic condition may not always be painful, but it does not mean it is not a problem that can develop into future pain and more significant breakdown of the masticatory system. The TMJ is a unique joint because you cannot move one joint without the other joint. Your jaw should function in a smooth and coordinated movement. Similar to our car tires that function ideally when they are balanced and rotated, our masticatory system (Our Jaw joints (TMJ’s), our masticatory muscles and our teeth) function best when they are working in harmony. Harmony in the masticatory system occurs when there are equal intensity forces on all of your teeth when the jaw joints are in their proper positions. And when functioning, the front teeth separate the back teeth to only engage 1/3 of the masticatory muscles. When the forces of mastication are in harmony, you should have minimal wear on the jaw joints, the teeth and the muscles of mastication. This harmony ensures longevity of the teeth and surrounding structures. When there is a lack of harmony, over 900 pounds per square inch of pressure can result in the breakdown of some or all of the masticatory structures. ### Why can that be a problem? Unstable bites can lead to problems with the teeth, muscles that work the jaw and the jaw joint. Teeth can wear prematurely, fracture and become loose. The jaw muscles can become overworked and sore leading to headaches. In the jaw joint there is cartilage which can become displaced leading to jaw noises, altered jaw movements and pain. One of the analogies we like to use is if the wheels on your car aren’t balanced, you can still drive the car, but over time the tires will wear out prematurely. Wear and tear to the car can occur, which in the long run is going to cost a lot more than just getting the tires balanced in the first place. ### What is an occlusal equilibration? ![Teeth](https://www.alpinecreekdental.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/teeth.png "Teeth | Alpine Creek Dental")Equilibration is the process of getting the bite balanced. Equilibration is the corrective process to get the teeth to hit evenly when the jaw joints are seated in their correct position, but we’re not biting on all of our teeth. Our goal is to get all the teeth hitting evenly to distribute the bite forces equally to all of the teeth. The simplest way to do that, often times, is to perform an occlusal equilibration. Equilibration on properly selected patients is very predictable, minimally invasive and extremely successful. An uneven bite is like a four-legged stool that wobbles a little bit. To fix the wobbly stool, you use a piece of sandpaper, determine which leg is the longest one, and reduce that leg just enough so that all the legs are even and the stool is stable on the floor. We do the same thing with the teeth, except we have more legs to consider. ### Dr. Thurmon and the Alpine Creek Dental team recommended an occlusal analysis because you have shown evidence of one or several of the following conditions: - Shifting of a tooth or teeth that has occurred for a variety of reasons - Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint or chewing muscles - Clicking or popping in your jaw joint - Chipped or cracked teeth, worn down teeth, or loose teeth - Gum recession, root exposure or sensitivity - Existing crowns, fillings, dentures, or partials that have worn down prematurely ### What is an Occlusal Analysis? Once one of the previously listed conditions has been identified, an occlusal analysis is a highly pecialized method of identifying why the problem has occurred and what is the best way to resolve the problem in the most conservative way. Dr. Thurmon dedicates an appointment entirely to collect all the necessary information needed to evaluate your bite. This painless appointment takes about an hour and includes a series of photographs of your teeth, molds or impressions of your teeth, measurements of how your jaws open and close, and a detailed examination of your joint muscles. After the doctor collects this information, we will study your bite on a special piece of equipment called an articulator, or bite machine. Our goal is to find the most conservative and least invasive way to protect your teeth and we have found that this method works very reliably for both the doctor and the patient. ### What is an Occlusal Equilibration? Occlusal Equilibration is a conservative and gentle treatment that reduces the stress on individual teeth or individual parts of the jaw. It creates an even and balanced bite so that normal chewing forces do not put too much stress any one tooth or part of the jaw. It also greatly reduces the amount of stress on the jaw joint or jaw muscles. There are several ways that the doctor’s can create this balance as it is highly personalized to your particular needs. ### Why should I consider this and why has this not been discussed with me in the past? Dental school is a great foundation for dentists, however, that is just the beginning of their training and knowledge. Almost all water naturally contains some fluoride. About two-thirds of American cities add additional fluoride to the water supply for the prevention of tooth decay. In fact, fluoridation of public water systems can reduce cavities in baby teeth by 60 percent and those in permanent teeth by 35 percent. ### The Benefits of Fluoride There are many benefits in the use of fluoride for people of all ages. When children are young and their teeth are forming, fluoride joins with the enamel surface and makes it harder and more resistant to decay. The benefits for adults are just as great. Fluoride can help repair an early cavity, even before it becomes visible in the mouth, by rebuilding the enamel layer of the teeth. The fixed retainer can remain in place for a long time, as long as it is cleaned properly. You can properly brush your teeth and gums as usual, but flossing should be done morecarefully. The wire is placed in a position that does not allow you to bring the floss down directly between your teeth. “Threader” is a special type of floss that works the best for ultimate cleaning. Using the stiffened end of the super floss, thread the spongy floss between the teeth and under the fixed retainer. Pull the spongy floss through to the retainer section. Gently slide the floss under the gum line. Curve it around the tooth. Use an up and down motion to remove plaque. If you have difficulty, be sure to ask us for further flossing techniques. This floss can be purchased at retail stores or online. The fixed retainer is typically bonded on the inside of your six lower teeth or on the inside of your four upper teeth. The best way to fight cavities is to minimize the time your mouth is acidic and to eliminate the Step Mutans bacteria that causes cavities. Here are some tips that will help you prevent cavities: - **Tooth Brushing:** Brush 2-3 times a day with an electric toothbrush, at a 45-degree angle to the gums. Think of your gums as a little turtleneck around the tooth and you want to clean out any debris that is in the turtleneck. You do not need to be aggressive; you must position the bristles, so they are cleaning out plaque from between your tooth and your gums. - **Floss, floss, floss:** It is a difficult habit to establish, but this is where people get cavities, between the teeth. Ideally you floss at bedtime, then brush, and then rinse with a fluoride mouth rise. But it is most important to do it. Put floss in your car, in your shower, in your desk drawer, in your backpack or purse – wherever you will see it. It is ok to use floss picks too if your fingers do not work the floss very well. Just do it! - **Fluoride:** Fluoride mouth rinse actually remineralizes your tooth making it more resistant to cavities. The best way to use it is after flossing and brushing, swish for 30 seconds and spit. Do not rinse. Do not eat or drink anything. Go to bed. The fluoride is remineralizing your teeth for 30 minutes making them more resistant to cavities. - **Xylitol:** This naturally occurring sugar starves the Strep Mutans bacteria that causes cavities. Crowns are used in cases of severely chipped or broken teeth, to cover the exposed area of a tooth following a root canal procedure, to replace a large old filling or for cosmetic reasons. When a filling is not a viable solution to correcting the damage sustained by a tooth, crowns can provide a long-term solution to restoring the function of your teeth and enhancing the appearance of your smile. Crowns can be made of all metal, all porcelain, or a combination of both. Because all crowns are custom made for each patient, it may take more than one appointment to complete. At your first visit, the area is numbed to make you comfortable. We will use a dental handpiece to shape and prepare the tooth so that the crown can properly fit over it. Next, impressions are taken of the prepared tooth. Often times, a temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the final crown is being made. The impressions are used to fabricate a model of your mouth on which the final crown is made. When your final crown is ready, dental cement is placed into the crown and it is cemented to the prepared tooth.
