Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Symptoms and Treatment

Many TMJ or jaw joint problems are chronic issues that are not always painful. If you have a "click or pop" when opening or closing your mouth, if you have ever had your jaw lock open or closed, or if you have had pain in your joints, head or neck headaches especially with new dental treatment or if your jaw muscles feel "tired or tight" you may have deterioration of your jaw joints, muscles, ligaments and/or teeth.

Similar to high blood pressure or a clicking hip or knee joint, this chronic condition may not always be painful, but it does not mean it is not a problem that can develop into future pain and more significant breakdown of the masticatory system. The TMJ is a unique joint because you cannot move one joint without the other joint. Your jaw should function in a smooth and coordinated movement. After completing the Dawson Academy residency, Dr. Thurmon is well trained in evaluation and treatment of your Temporomandibular Joint (Jaw Joint).
